THE ANCIENTS were good at resisting seduction. Odysseus fought the seductive song of the Sirens by having his men tie him to the mast of his ship as it sailed past the Siren's Isle. Socrates was so intent on protecting citizens from the seductive opinions of artists and writers, that he outlawed them from his imaginary republic.
We moderns are less nimble at resisting great seductions, particularly those utopian visions that promise grand political or cultural salvation. From the French and Russian revolutions to the counter-cultural upheavals of the '60s and the digital revolution of the '90s, we have been seduced, time after time and text after text, by the vision of a political or economic utopia.

Let's face it. Building a web site that browses consistently on multiple platforms and multiple browsers is not always as easy as we would like.
It is safe to say that most designers spend most of their time building their sites on a given platform. Those with the highest standards should, upon completion, take a look at their creation in different browsers and different platforms.

Where's the steering wheel on this thing?
Ever been lost on the Web? It happened to me in the first week after I plugged in to my ISP, and I didn't like it. I clicked in from Alta Vista to a page that referred to other pages in the same site, but didn't tell you how to reach them. I clicked on a link, found myself in an obscure German Web site, clicked the back button, tried again ... and eventually gave up and typed in a new Web site location. The Web gives you nothing if not easy alternatives.

I've noticed a slightly funny but disturbing trend lately: all my clients want something called "Web 2.0." Maybe you've noticed it, too. People aren't happy with a just site anymore. Now they want it sprinkled with magic fairy Web 2.0 pixie dust before they're happy.
Who can blame them? It's next to impossible to have a discussion about the Web these days without someone invoking Web 2.0. Popular media, blogs, trade pubs, and technology magazines: are all talking about a revolution we're supposedly in the midst of.
